REPUBLIKA – Agus Hermanto, vice chairman of the People’s Representative Council (DPR) asked newly appointed Lt. Gen. (ret) Sutiyoso, chief of the National Intelligence Agency (BIN) and the Indonesian Military (TNI) Chief, Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo to improve the security of the country. BIN, in particular, should be able to prevent wiretapping concocted by foreign intelligence.
“For example, the issue of wiretapping by Australia, hopefully it won’t happen again, “Hermanto said at the DPR Complex Senayan, Wednesday (8/7). Australian intelligence had tapped Indonesian leaders and their closest circle in 2009.
Hermanto expected, as new intelligence chief, Sutiyoso should be able to increase surveillance and security of the state secret information. By doing so, foreign tapping could be anticipated.
For the TNI Chief, the Democratic Party politician hoped, the TNI Chief could improve the procurement of primary weaponry defense system. He added, it needed to be done for the sake of a stronger national defense. “In the era of President SBY (Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono) our national defense was at high level. It should be higher for the safety of the country, “said Hermanto.
Meanwhile, BIN former Chief, Marciano Norman had a special message for Sutiyoso who officially replaced him yesterday. Norman advised that Sutiyoso should improve the quality of human resources (HR) of BIN. “Improving the quality of human resources should be a priority, “he said, at the State Palace yesterday.
Norman continued, improving the quality of human resources was very important in order to improve the quality of BIN so the state could have a better deterrent power.
In addition, Norman reminded that Sutiyoso should modernize intelligence equipment. Therefore, intelligence work would be greatly assisted if supported by cutting-edge equipment. “Technology has also become our priority. We have a roadmap about the intelligence technology BIN must have in the future, “he said.
According to Norman, he had conveyed his message directly to Sutiyoso. Before the inauguration, he had a meeting with the former Jakarta Governor to give an idea about the condition and the challenges BIN would face in the future.
