Islamic Syari’ah in Aceh Protects Minorities

BANDA ACEH, KOMPAS – Sarah Sewall, the undersecretary for civilian security, democracy, and human rights at the US State Department, hopes the application of Islamic Syari’ah in Aceh will protect minorities. The minorities should be allowed to express opinions and worship.

Sewall attended the inauguration of the US Education Center at the Ar Raniry State Islamic University (UIN), Banda Aceh, Wednesday (9/10). The Education Center facilitates students in Aceh who wish to continue their educations in the US.

Sewall said, democracy in Aceh continued to grow and develop in the post of tsunami and humanitarian conflicts. Aceh had become a more open region to the international community. They could accept people who came from outside Aceh to visit or live in the region.

In addition, Sewall highlighted the application of Islamic Syari’ah in Aceh. The application of such law in Aceh had become the Acehnese special rights compared to other regions in Indonesia. “That’s the uniqueness of Aceh based on its historical background, “she said.

“If there was no control, it could lead to friction between religious groups in Aceh. It would hurt democracy that has worked well in Aceh, “she said.

Ar Raniry UIN Rector, Farid Wajdi Ibrahim said, the Aceh Government was committed that the application of Islamic Syari’ah in Aceh would not restrict freedom of expression and worship of those who embrace religions other than Islam. Because, the Syari’ah had more focus on Muslims. Non-Muslims were required to respect it.

Lack of experts
According to Suraiya, deputy coordinator of the Institute for Improvement of Acehnese Human Resources, in the post of conflicts for about 30 years, education in Aceh has been lagging behind other regions in Indonesia. Aceh has a shortage of experts in the fields of agriculture, mining, and health. As a result, these sectors have not been able to develop optimally.

To that end, the Aceh Government continues to establish cooperation with a number of countries to open scholarship network. “We send about 300 students to a number of countries each year to learn about agriculture, mining, health, and others. It is expected to support the development of a better Aceh, “he said.

Kurang tenaga ahli

Wakil Koordinator Lembaga Peningkatan Sumber Daya Manusia Aceh Suraiya mengatakan, pasca dirundung konflik kemanusiaan selama sekitar 30 tahun, pendidikan Aceh menjadi tertinggal dibandingkan daerah- daerah lain di Indonesia.
